SMARIOT (Bachelor's thesis)
Bachelor's thesis (grade 1.0): a smart-mirror IoT hub with a voice, vision and gesture AI avatar that helps older adults live independently.

Context
Bachelor's thesis at the TUM Chair of Augmented Reality: "SMARIOT – Elevating Elderly Independence through Smart Mirror, Augmented Reality, and IoT Technologies." Graded 1.0 (the best possible German grade). It combined her medical-applications focus with AR and HCI.
The problem
Older adults want to live independently at home for as long as possible, but everyday tasks — remembering medication, managing the home, staying connected — get harder, and most smart-home tech isn't designed for them.
What I did
- Researched and built a smart-home system with a smart mirror as the central hub — an interface older people already use every day, with no new device to learn.
- IoT sensor integration for home automation and awareness of what's happening in the home.
- Medication management — reminders and support for taking medication on time.
- An AI avatar on the mirror that users interact with naturally via voice/speech, vision and waving/gesture, instead of touchscreens or apps.
- Designed with elderly usability as a core requirement and evaluated the system with this user group in mind.
Tech
Python (mirror software) · IoT sensors · smart-mirror hardware (display behind two-way mirror) · speech recognition / voice interaction · computer vision / gesture detection · AR · AI avatar
Why this shows I can…
- Carry a research project from problem to working system to a top-graded thesis.
- Design multimodal, natural interaction (voice, vision, gesture) for a real user group — the same thinking behind her later gaze research.
Results
- Thesis grade 1.0.
- Working smart-mirror prototype with IoT integration and a multimodal AI avatar.
