Research Engineering Intern – JetBrains Research

Research on multimodal context for developers: VR prototype, eye-tracking data pipeline, and a research paper.

Context

Research Engineering Intern (SWE Research Engineer Intern) in the HAX — Human-AI Experience — group of the ML Research department at JetBrains Research Munich, since April 2026. Supervisor: Ilya Zakharov, Senior Researcher. Project title: "Enhancing Tech Creation through Multimodal Context."

Scope of the internship

  • Design and implement a minimal, modular VR prototype for working with code.
  • Create and test a pipeline for eye-tracking + interaction data for analysis and machine learning.
  • Deliver one focused interaction or model (e.g. mode switching, gaze-aware navigation or gaze-guided inference) with a short evaluation.
  • Write a research paper.

What I did

  • GAZEAIDE / Implicit: a JetBrains IDE plugin that triggers AI code explanations from implicit gaze behaviour — published on the JetBrains Marketplace. See its own entry.
  • CodeGaze: an open-source IntelliJ plugin + OpenXR/WebXR viewer that streams the editor into VR and records which code token the eye or head ray hits. See its own entry.
  • Wrote and defended the research proposal (LaTeX + TikZ) and ran the literature review on gaze in program comprehension.
  • Researched VR extended-desktop architectures (Pico Connect, Virtual Desktop, SteamVR) and designed a device-agnostic OpenXR gaze layer.
  • Collaborated with a VR studio specialising in spatial environment editing on a plugin for 3D coding, preparing the technical consultation with their experts.

Tech

Java · Kotlin · Python · IntelliJ Platform / PSI · OpenXR · WebXR · Godot · Unity · LLM APIs · LaTeX · pymovements · DuckDB · Bigscreen Beyond 2e · Pico 4 Enterprise

Why this shows I can…

Work as a research engineer: scope open questions, build production-quality research tools and communicate them in writing.
